Stage 1   Stage 2

Stage I
Ok, fine, so we're feeling a little silly.

Inspired by the popular shorthand WWJD? (What Would Jesus Do?), an intrepid Sparks reader submitted his personal motto: What Would Jean-Luc Picard Do? So we start with this Internet image of Star Trek captain Jean-Luc Picard (in real life, Shakespearian-trained actor Patrick Stewart) featuring the cool, steely gaze, the pouffy costume, and the fabulous bald head.

Stage II
We wanted to focus only on the pointy top of Stewart's head, but it stopped looking like a head and started looking like a particularly well-tanned potato, so we cropped the photo to include said Cool, Steely Gaze as well as the pointy ears. The typeface selection was a cinch, vaguely Trekkie and easy to read. But Pat's nose seems disturbingly cut off and we're not quite getting that dramatic tension inherent in the quote. (No, we really don't think there's dramatic tension, we're just trying to keep you interested.)

Final
Aha! The final version crops more closely on Stewart's face to focus in on The Gaze. We tried not to kern the type (even out the spacing between letters) but the obsessive-compulsive need was too great to ignore. We threw in the light outline in order to tighten the compositional focus (that really is true, not just tossed in here for the entertainment value).

Find your heros where you will. Make it so!
