Creative process for September 2005 design
Back to Sparks

Stage 1   Stage 2

Stage I
After selecting a beautiful image appropriate to the theme of diverse people coming together to rebuild a shattered community, the remaining design challenge was typographic composition. While the approach above is visually interesting, it's also difficult to read. Type and image are competing with each other.

Stage II
After working with the design more, we somehow ended up increasing the conflict between type and image. Sometimes it's just better not to make things complicated, don't you think?

Final
Simplify, simplify. Clear type that integrates nicely with the composition of the hands. The transparency of the image helps connect "world" with the hands, communicating "togetherness." The strong horizontals of the hands and type are balanced by the overall height of the canvas. The bright spot of lighting in the lower right quadrant, plus the edge of the pinky finger on the bottom of the hands, draws the eye to the Gandhi attribution. All in all, a good reminder of what it takes to create a world.
