Creative process for October 2004 design
Back to Sparks

Stage 1   Stage 2

Stage I
We went through about six different concepts for this quote, which seems strangely appropriate for the upcoming election. One of our more attractive options was this "bumper sticker" look, but it's too passive and almost looks like a Salvation Army or Red Cross message. Too nice.

Stage II
We switched to a more active type family (Emigre's Dogma) and worked with the "stars-n-bars" theme. But it's beginning to look a lot like prison (which may be fine, depending on your political persuasion), and the design is very angry. The strong verticals drive down too aggressively and "trap" the letterforms of "embrace." Not really the feel we're going for.

Simplify, simplify, simplify. We moved "reject" to the right. Now it lines up along the lefthand sightline with the edge of "fear" and the bottom left corner of the box to drive your eye into "embrace" in a more dynamic way. That, in turn, combines with the blue horizontal rules to move your eye to "hope." which is underscored by the stars. The composition is much more open and active, allowing the eye to move freely while communicating the essential message.
