Creative process for November 2004 design
Back to Sparks

Stage 1   Stage 2
Stage I
This typeface, Bell Centennial, is one of the uglier typefaces around. It's the face used in telephone books and is designed to hold up well at tiny sizes. It has all sorts of interesting shapes when you enlarge it (notice the "wobbles" (i.e. "hints") in the E or F above), but no matter how you slice it, it's still pretty ugly. Why in the world is it paired with this lovely quote? Because it seems so incongruous. It's a challenge. Creative ruts must be overcome.

Stage II
We warped the text to give it some dimension and also added outlines (blurred here due to low resolution) so each line would be distinct from the one above it. Our vague concept was to "do something with flowers," and so the play process began. But it soon became clear that a straightforward "pretty" solution wouldn't work here. We wanted something more dynamic and with more emotional punch.

Yowza! Fun with Photoshop layers! We played with transparency and color to create that dynamism and punch. At some point during the creative process, the duplicate flower/type element in the upper right "occurred." We're not sure how. But serendipity is the creative's best friend. Changing the "glow" approach from Step II into an offset transparency on the type added a whole new dimension. The result? A visual feast of bold shapes and color in keeping with the encouragement of the quote. May the holidays bring you joy and beauty!
