Stage
I
This lovely quote by Roman philosopher Ovid begins, oddly enough,
with a desert image. But the lines, peaceful expansiveness,
and gorgeous light perfectly express the feeling of the quote.
As experienced Sparks readers know, we always start our designs
in black- and-white to work out composition before adding color.
Here the photo is so inviting it's overwhelming the type. |

Stage II
We reduced the photo and created a more dynamic typographic
composition. Now the contrast of letterforms between geometric
Futura (at top) and elegant script Viant (bottom) is harmonized
by separating the two blocks of type. Both the horizontal
line of "take a rest" and the "stairstep"
effect of the bottom block of text leads the eye into the
photo. But overall it's still too harsh.
