Creative process for May 2002 design
Back to Sparks

Stage I
It all begins, as so much of life, with M&Ms. We wanted to start with a base of variable color and regular shapes that would lend themselves to being "exploded." Chocolate again saves the day.

Stage II
Early sketches have legibility problems, as elements compete for emphasis. It's also just not "loud" enough. Composition could be stronger. "Grunge" typeface says "Take me as you find me"—certainly the sign of an artist!

  Final
We pumped up the color, finessed the M&Ms so their shapes dissolved, de-emphasized the Zola attribution, layered the type and made it glow for emphasis and to give the sense of vibration, and created better integration between type and image (note the "flame" over the "i" of "live"). Designing out loud! Whew!
