Creative process for March 2006 design
Back to Sparks

Stage 1   Stage 2
Stage I
We began with this standard-yet-odd stock photography image. The image of the old man hiding in uncertainty yet peeping out with curiosity fit the meaning of this famous van Gogh quote.

Stage II
We flipped and cropped the image of the man to focus on his face and to use the image of his fingertips to lead the viewer's eye into the composition. We selected Fallen Thyme for the typeface for its sense of ambiguity and drama. But this design can be pushed further.

We replaced the man's warm skin tones with a duotone look. After adding cotton candy colors to the type, the contrast in color helps communicate the contrast between uncertainty (greyness) and dreams (technicolor). Special effects on the type help add to the "dreamy" sense and give a sense of possibility. Van Gogh's timeless quote is a great reminder that it's never too late to tap that sense of wonder in ourselves, even in times of uncertainty.
