Creative process for June 2005 design

Stage 1   Stage 2

Stage I
Our Katharine Hepburn quote evoked images of all the rules and regulations that govern our lives. What better representation of that idea than road signs? We selected signs which had contradictory or "stop" meanings (except for the cow, which was just surreal). The arrows point this way and that while the messages from the signs give a sense of authoritarianism.

Stage II
We finessed the composition of the signs a little more and then experimented with color. And it's awfully colorful. But the playful color sends the wrong message—suddenly the signs aren't so scary any more. We'll have to go back to some dull color scheme. We also just threw the quote on in a neutral typeface to spark some ideas of how to handle it.

We pushed the signs into the background by changing their color to a nice, boring, bureaucratic grey. Kate's quote went in a lively script with lots of humanistic details in order to contrast with the "automaton" quality of the signs. Adding color and starburst icons gave the quote more weight and zing, while the lime green drop shadow helps the whole bottom section pop a bit more. The result: a helpful reminder to liven it up!
