Creative process for January 2008 design
Back to Sparks

Stage 1   Stage 2

Stage I
For this lovely quote, we immediately thought of an illustration by Jim Johnson that we'd developed for a client's logo (they chose to go with a different illustration). The sense of wonder and quiet beauty fits the sensibilities of the quote.

Stage II
We then selected Caslon Antique for the typeface. It combines classic forms with roughened edges that go nicely with the illustration. We added rich color to the illustration, darkening the edges of the starfish and net so in order to give it a more 3-D effect. Our original design finished off with a narrow, soft-edged background. But we were not satisfied!

Final
Instead of the tall, narrow composition, we wanted to develop a round background. In the process of sketching out the background, however, we discovered that the scribbled brushstrokes were creating a beautiful "cupped" shape that seemed made of white fire. We went with it! (always respect serendipity), adding and subtracting to get the feel we were going for. Joy rises up from within and catches souls in a net of love.
