Creative process for January 2003 design

Stage I
This powerful quote comes from the Irish writer James Joyce, whose jumbled literary style was expressed in his masterpiece "Finnegan's Wake." We started our design by focusing on the key words in the quote and exploring how the different versions of the typeface Dogma communicate different messages about the words themselves.

Stage II
Bring on the texture! We used layering and contrast of size/direction to give a sense of Joyce's stream-of-consciousness style and send a subtle message about the complex nature of "reality" and experience. But the black type is too harsh for the soft background and the piece overall doesn't quite gel.

  Final
With a color change, overall light lavender background, and even more layering, we begin see the disparate elements of the design gel into a cohesive whole. Large and small shapes move forward and back in the complex background, while the uneven green offset of the main quote keeps the viewer off-guard. We enlarged the main type so the quote becomes more "in your face" or, conversely, appears within a "window frame" that the viewer looks into. Strong verticals in the background keep the eye bouncing inside the frame and add to the energy of the quote.
