Creative process for February 2006 design

Stage 1   Stage 2
Stage I
A quote so sure of itself just cries out for some ambiguity. We selected Atomic Suck for the typeface and manipulated letterforms and line spacing to break up the rhythm.

Stage II
In the magical world of Photoshop, we added another layer of letterforms to start building the ambiguity. A swash line with very soft edges adds color, dynamism, and another layer of meaning. The odd background shape is preliminary—time to play with filters and see what we get!

A dramatic radial blur on the background shape creates a mysterious background. A less dramatic blur on the line results in the background looking almost egg-like, with a mysterious life form inside. This is either a metaphor for creativity or for alien invasion. Take your pick. More layers of type, now flipped for reverse reading, and multiple special effects create an ambiguous "push-pull" composition. Our final step: warm up the color overall to add to the "pull." All elements work together to contrast with the meaning of the quote, creating an intriguing commentary.
