Stage 1   Stage 2

Stage I
This great Anne McCaffrey quote started as a rough sketch almost three years ago before we abandoned it in favor of something more frivolous. We wanted to play off the contrast of a highly structured serif typeface with a fluid yet classic script.

Stage II
We picked it up again and tried playing with a different serif typeface and livening up the script with alternate characters. The color is just “messing about” color—random hues chosen to differentiate the forms. But everything competes for attention in this approach.

Final
We changed the serif yet again, deciding on a version of Bodoni that is classic, structured, and yet humanized. Using color and composition, we balanced the “who” against the more active and prominent script word. For this bold quote, we chose warm and rooted colors that would propel it forward. We also added the organic abstract shape behind the words to add scale and suggest a road, water, and action. Lastly, we scaled each set of words up slightly to enhance the sense of depth and boldness. Go forth and live!
