Creative process for August 2006 design
Back to Sparks

Stage 1   Stage 2

Stage I
We began our creative journey with this wonderful photo of Ingrid Bergman getting pelted with snow by a camera crew. The photo shows the spirit of joy and playfulness that comes from embracing life fully. We knew the typeface would need to be serif to stand out adequately against the background; here, we're just playing with fonts!

Stage II
After some experimentation, we chose a "messy" typeface that mirrors the "splotches" of snow in the photo. Rounded corners help soften the image and layering adds visual interest. The changes in color help highlight the importance of each phrase. The design is coming together but the type is difficult to read and overall things are just not quite there.

Final
Our final knocks the rounded boxes more askew and tightens up the type to create a more solid composition. The major change was to shift the color of the photo from the original black and white to more of a duotone look. The cool colors of photo and boxes contrast nicely with the hot colors used for the type. We finessed spacing and scale, then added shadow and glow effects to the type to help it pop out from the background a bit more. The quote and photo complement each other nicely and the spirit of the words are still summed up eloquently by the fantastic look on Bergman's face!
