Creative process for August 2004 design

Stage 1   Stage 2
Stage I
In honor of the Olympics, we chose this quote by Greek philosopher Aristotle. The obvious visual accompaniment is the Olympic flame. We first selected the typeface Socrates for the quote as one of those inside jokes for designers, but it's too active and downright spastic for the spirit of the quote.

Stage II
Undaunted, we selected Rusticana as our typeface. Rusticana is based on Roman inscriptional writing from the third and fourth centuries C.E., which is close enough to Greek writing for this exercise! We wrapped the type around the icon and emphasized the key word "Excellence."

After tightening up the type a bit, we added soft, blended colors to the artwork and then a light drop shadow for the design overall. The blends in the torch plus the drop shadows add dimension to the piece while keeping the overall feel light and classic. With this design, we salute all Olympic competitors as well as the Olympian ideals of excellence and peace.
