Creative process for August 2002 design

Stage I
As usual, we started by investigating which typeface would be best. We knew we wanted to go with either an Art Nouveau or German Expressionist look. The Art Nouveau typeface (left) has a capital "S" that is just too distracting for the design.

Stage II
We set the type to emphasize the key action words (pause, question, listen). Since the last line was so short, we added the woodcut "streaks" on either end to finish off the quote. But what to do with the attribution? How to tie it all together?

Final
We added a heavy black border in order to tie the piece together. The attribution was separated visually by both moving it down and reversing the text out in white. We added some "distress" on the borders in order to create an overall integration. The final effect picks up on the power and strength of German Expressionism while communicating the imaginative inspiration of the quote.
