In 2004, Indiana University launched a new multidisciplinary major,
the International Studies Program. By combining seven core courses
with IU’s rich resources in other disciplines, the International
Studies major prepares students for careers in international diplomacy,
non-governmental organizations, the arts, and business.
Other universities offered well-established international programs,
so IU faced competition. They needed to make an immediate, powerful
impact with the brochure and poster for the new program.
Brand: Students interested in international studies
tend to be intelligent high achievers. We got their attention with
an oversized (11x17) brochure with a striking main image, sophisticated
typography, and metallic inks that make the brochure shimmer.
Our design communicates the expansive, yet personal, nature of the
global perspective through imagery, expanded typography, and a wide
layout for the interior copy. The strong underlying structure of
the layout reassures parents that this a “legitimate”
major. The bright blue blocks and contemporary type treatment attract
attention while communicating that this is a degree for sophisticated,
savvy people.

Content: We helped develop the program’s
marketing strategy around the theme “Focus Wide.” Taking
copy and testimonials supplied to us by the client, we split all
content up into readable chunks and highlighted the most compelling
aspects of the testimonials.
The day the brochure and accompanying poster were introduced, the
buzz spread through campus. A program dean went out of her way to
congratulate our clients on the effectiveness of the design. And
students have responded by signing up for the program. The program
has had a strong start, thanks to the impact of the marketing materials.
I am a satisfied repeat customer of
Cairril.com. Her striking concept for International Studies has
already drawn positive attention to the program. She took our slogan
“Focus Wide” and found the perfect image to go with
it. Her choice of color and arrangement of text and photographs
produced a strong, aesthetically pleasing statement both in the
brochure and poster. She has given us an original visual identity
of which we are proud and created a buzz about the new program campus-wide
and beyond.
